Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best winter and rain gear?

Creative Nature Academy is a full immersive nature experience where we are outside playing and learning in all weather, excluding inclement weather. For this reason it is very important for each student to come prepared for whatever nature has in store for the day. On cold, wet days, staying dry is our top priority. There is a lot of gear on the market right now, so here are some tips to choose the right gear for you or your child.

The first thing to consider is footwear. Keeping hands and feet dry are essential for enjoying the full outdoor experience. Rain boots work well in wram weather, but can often lead to cold feet on colder days, even when feet are dry. On days straddling freezing temperatures, I recommend waterproof boots with insulation.  The cold temperatures will creep up from through the soles of the boots, even with thick socks. Waterproof hiking boots or shoes work best for days above 40 degrees as they allow for more free movement. In states with drastic temperature changes such as Michigan, bringing a change of shoes for variable weather is best.  As always, being prepared with a spare pair of socks is a great idea!

The next thing to consider is the base layer. Some people run hotter than others, even in colder weather, so keep this in mind as you prepare for your outdoor adventures. Base layers are designed to trap a layer of warm air close to the body. Base layers are often made from moisture-wicking materials that draw sweat away from the skin. By keeping the skin dry, they prevent the body from losing heat through evaporation, which can otherwise lead to feeling cold. Base layers also help regulate body temperature by keeping you warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. Base layers are usually designed to fit snugly against the skin without restricting movement. Smartwool, REI, and LL Bean all offer great options!

Also consider the insulating layer worn over the base layer, and under the outer shell. Insulating layers should be easy to remove to adjust to changing temperatures and activity level.

Now let's talk about rain gear. There are many options for one piece rainsuits, which are a great option, especially for younger students as it prevents clothing from getting wet when giant puddles call for big splashes. Tuffo and Oaki both make great gear that holds up well enough to be passed on and on. There are many other great brands selling quality one piece gear, but these two brands seems to hold up the best through mud, rain, and snow.   One benefit of having a one piece is that it's very versatile and bulky enough to allow for multiple warm layers underneath, and can work for temperatures below freezing, to about 20 degrees fahrenheit. below 20 degrees or so I recommend  waterproof and insulated winter gear.

Are the students outdoors all day?

Yes! Creative Nature Academy believes that every weather condition is a chance for a new adventure. Rainy days? Perfect for jumping in puddles and discovering the magic of raindrops. Snowy days? Time to build snow forts and have epic snowball fights! We're all about embracing the elements and turning them into opportunities for fun and learning.

But here's the best part: spending all day outdoors, no matter the weather, is not only doable—it's actually really good for your child! Seriously! Studies show that outdoor play boosts creativity, reduces stress, and builds resilience. Plus, it's fantastic for their physical health too! So, whether it's rain, snow, or sunshine, rest assured that your kiddo will be having a blast and learning tons while they're at it. Because at our nature school, every day is an adventure worth braving, and we can't wait to share it with your family.

Can my child attend multiple days?

Yes! Your child can absolutely attend multiple days at Creative Nature Academy. We'd love to have them join us for more outdoor adventures and fun-filled learning experiences!

What to bring to class?

Here's what your kiddo will need for their CNA adventure:

  1. Backpack: A sturdy backpack is perfect for carrying all their essentials and treasures they may find along the way!

  2. Change of Clothes: Because let's face it, nature can get messy—and that's half the fun! Pack an extra set of clothes just in case they decide to dive into a mud puddle or explore in the rain.

  3. Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key, especially when you're busy adventuring outdoors! Don't forget to pack a water bottle so your little explorer can quench their thirst whenever they need.

  4. Lunch and Snack: Pack a nutritious lunch and some yummy snacks to fuel their outdoor adventures. Trail mix, fruit, and granola bars are great options for on-the-go energy! An insulated thermos is a great option for keeping food and beverages warm on colder days, and drinks chilled on warmer days. Remember, we follow a 'pack in, pack out' philosophy as part of our Leave No Trace principles, so please ensure all food packaging and leftovers are brought back home to be disposed of properly. Let's keep our outdoor spaces beautiful and clean for everyone to enjoy!

  5. Dress for the Weather: Whether it's sunny, rainy, or snowy, make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. That means sunscreen, bug spray and hats for sunny days, rain boots and jackets for wet days, and warm layers for chilly days.

And remember, leave the toys at home—nature's playground has everything we need for a day of fun and discovery!
